More than 35 years ago, Barry Commoner, the award-winning US eco-socialist and biologist, argued in his book, The Closing Circle, that technologies were chiefly responsible for environmental degradation. Population growth was not a contributing factor. Other eco-biologists argued that population growth was the main culprit.
We submit that the truth lies somewhere in between. Population growth creates more demands for existing and new support technologies which create more pressures on the ecological system which succumbs to the pressures of population growth which then requires more technologies, and so on. Then toss into this mix, economic globalization and the emergence of Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs), and the use of resources increases dramatically. For example, China's use of fossil fuel has increased more than one-third over the past decade, ranking it second in the world behind the United States. NIC Turkey's use of CO2 emissions has jumped 2.5 times since 1980.

We have all heard the expression, “there is no ‘I’ in team,” yet if it wasn’t for “U,” there wouldn’t be a team. Granted we are using our “U” trademark to express “you,” but think about it, teams are comprised of two or more of you. And, successful collaboration requires many of you.
With the use of social networking technologies from texting on mobile devises to social network internet sites, skills and behaviors are being formed that are more dynamic and fluid yet at the same time foster teamwork and collaboration.

Move over Magellan,* and * Phileas Fogg,** UNISON is setting world records too. In the past year, UNISON teams traversed the globe 23 times for a total of 226, 822 miles. That’s equivalent to circumnavigating the globe 8.8 times. We’ve designed and supported meetings held in 43 different cities on four continents -- Asia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Our record-breaking travel year saw UNISON ‘circumvent’ cultural and language barriers, too. We collaborated with local meeting developers to deliver content in six languages including English, Chinese, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese and Turkish. The UNISON design team created interactive modules and individual screens that successfully accommodated the cultural preferences and nuances of the meeting participants. So say our clients and participants:

James Bodajlo shares his professional and personal views on the progress of UNISON that he has seen and experienced in the seven plus years that he’s been with the firm.
U: What are some of the accomplishments that you are most proud of in the seven plus years that you have been with UNISON?
JB: I am most proud of how far the software has come since I was first brought into the project with the directive of turning what was then solely a chat room into a customizable web-based chat room. It has now become a database-driven groupware application that runs all types of interactive group activities.
I don’t think anyone could have envisioned that we would be where we are now. Getting here took a lot of hard work and long hours of planning and coding and there were certainly many milestones along the way, ranging from being able to send customized content to the first time we could control the client machines individually. Flexibility and stability of the system itself have improved by leaps and bounds.

This past month, UNISON continued its record breaking travels. We headed to Cape Town, South Africa to support Deloitte’s Global New Partner Conference. With this trip, we set a new UNISON record surpassing Luna 2’s* trip to the moon by 3,635 miles. Our new total of travel miles leaps to 242,492.**
What’s more, this is the 10th time -- another record -- that Deloitte and UNISON have collaborated on this very important “rite of passage” meeting, a testament, we believe, to our long-standing partnership with Deloitte.
Though we love setting new records, our main objective is to help set new heights in transforming meetings into exciting, highly interactive, extremely productive experiences.
*First spacecraft to reach and land on the moon
**238,857 miles from the Earth to the moon.
