Dan
Kerr, Director of Global Development of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu
and a pioneer user of UNISON talks about his experiences with
the process and the technology.
UNISON: You have been a long-time user of UNISON for
Deloitte's Global New Partners Meetings. Would you explain why you
use UNISON for these meetings?
DK: We use UNISON to enhance the effectiveness of our plenary sessions and to capture, summarize, and share the combined thinking of large groups of participants.
UNISON: Hark back to the first time you used UNISON, what were your
concerns?
DK: The main concern was the lack of advanced planning as
to how the technology was to be used in each session prior to the program.
UNISON: How were your concerns allayed?
DK: Once we had experience using the system, we were able
to work with the UNISON team to determine how to use the technology
more effectively. Each time we use it, we combine the participant feedback
with our own observations and those of our facilitators to fine-tune and
enhance the next application of the technology.

UNISON: What UNISON features/functions have you used and why?
DK: Mainly we use UNISON for interactive table-top activities (U-Think).
We also use it for generating questions for speakers (U-Ask).
UNISON: What functions would you like to see added to UNISON?
DK: It would be great if we could add voice capability so individual tables
could be accessed without having to pass around microphones.
UNISON: What advantages does UNISON provide you in achieving your meeting's
objectives?
DK: UNISON enables me to connect the thinking of facilitators and participants
and to maintain a written record of participant thinking and input.
UNISON: Do you see a downside to using UNISON? If so, what is it?
DK: There is a risk of becoming too comfortable with one type of approach
and not being as innovative as you should be each time the technology is
used.
UNISON: What would be your advice to a person who is considering using UNISON?
DK: Try to attend a session where the technology is used first. Then, speak
to others that have used the technology. Finally, and most importantly, integrate
the use of the technology into a formal design summary that is reviewed and
agreed to by all parties in advance.
UNISON: What other insights would you like to share?
DK: Although UNISON is a great tool, it does not reduce the amount of time
spent on design and review of planned sessions. If anything, it increases
the time required. However, ample past experience has illustrated [that]
this is time well spent.
